Cursed yet coveted small town life-part 4.

The amazing urban legends.

Oh! Yes how can I forget……..the URBAN LEGENDS. As you know I write about this small town, where I live, the small town I love.

All the people I know hate my fixation with this small town…..which is my home………..which has taught me the importance of simple living. But they say its a tough world out there and you can’t spend all your life in a barely there small town.

So true and realistic but that doesn’t mean that small towns aren’t realistic. The only unrealistic or should I say “surrealistic” thing about small towns are the urban legends related to them.

So, here we go…….

Urban legend 1: the ghost of the well.

Yes……..So spooky, thats what I thought when I first heard about it. It all started with a newspaper article and my whole neighborhood was talking about it. An olderly neighbor confirmed herself that she witnessed it. There are various versions of it. My neighbors version was of the sounds that come when you look into it. Legend has it that a pregnant woman commited suicide by drowning in the well because somebody was after her child another version is that you can still hear the water bubbling sounds because the ghost still resides in there. Another version goes like that woman was actually a queen who was trying to survive some enemies and so on. Whatever it is but the best part of it all is that this story is being told to the residents of my small towns from generations. Its like a legacy, smething you safeguard for the future generations something that remains the same throughout time lines.

Urban legend 2:Star crossed lovers

Every small town has one urban legend about a young couple. I have lived in many so I know, Anyways my small town has this legend about a star crossed couple who hid from the world and used to meet by the lake. The premise always changes that their families were against it or the girl and the boy belonged to different community. But the facts remain the same. Two star crossed lovers faced restrictions imposed on their feelings. The most best part about this legend is that its whispered from one young soul to the other, within school corridors to college verandahs. What happened of the couple is qhat happens of every star crossed couple. They were doomed, they commited suicide. But now they are a legend, Thats what a legend does it makes you realise that some stories just don’t remain stories, they become immortal, just like the people in them. People might forget or desert a small town but urban legends cannot be forgotten, they are not meant to be forgotten.

Cursed yet coveted small town life-part 3

[continued from last post]

Small towns………well, they remind me how we used to live in the old times without excess, greed, and with simple lifestyle. Small town life, it gave me exposure to both the sides of world. Like this friend who was environment enthusiast, spread awareness about cutting of trees and another friend who cuts unwanted trees in the farms regularly, why? because you can’t let a thorny desert tree grow on farm boundary, where fruits are meant to be grown. Thats why its cursed and coveted.

Yeah! City streets are crowded, but can you resist riding a bike on a dirt road. We all love to hangout, but can you hangout with the whole family, all under one roof

At the end of the day its not about big cities vs smalltowns. Its about how many trips you can make to fbb for a pair of socks and special festive sweets(just kidding).

Small town life……..Its all about pretty skies, long drives, beautiful lanscapes and the ever present oppurtunity of having longlasting friendship.

Cursed yet coveted small town life-part 3

Legendary lakes and pretty skies.

Lotus lake

My smalltown is blessed with beautiful spots, that make me feel glad about not really having exotic vacations due to busy schedules and visiting these beautiful spots if I wish to have one.

Riding on the same roads I rode on since I was a school girl, its a completely different feeling you get especially if you are growing up in a smalltown. Because in a smalltown you can notice little changes but still everything feels the same, like time standing still.

People call it short sighted worldview , too absorbed in your comfort zone that you can’t really see things for what they are. They might be right, who am I kidding. Never really listening to your heart and falling into a specific mould is considered expansion of world view, when in reality it only gets compressed.

Changing times

Changing times is a bigger deal when it comes to small towns because none of us want to be stuck in a place where you are not who you want to be. I can’t imagine a place where you grew up can give you existential crisis but then again anything can lead to an existential crisis.

But I don’t think about any more as long as I can have my morning tea under the crystal blue sky of this lovely town I really don’t.

Cursed yet coveted, small town life-part 2.

Best coffee in the world.

A lot of people can judge you for your taste in coffee. But the best coffee in the world is what you have with your friends. After living in various different towns, I was sure of one thing that I am going to have tons of friends. They often come to visit me here in my town. The purpose of visit isn’t just meeting an old friend, its shopping, visiting relatives, a doctors appointment and some more shopping.

It is said that humanity runs on coffee, but when small townie friends meet for one with an ambition to run some errands during the day, that old saying is reversed:”Coffee runs on humanity.”

Same Coffee different ways.

The reason behind having a coffee could be anything. But the most common according to me is boredom.Yes, why else anybody would like to have a coffee? If only they were not tired, would be my answer. Back in the times there used to be this lunch home where they had really nice south indian dishes(so, good coffee). But nowadays, we have themed cafes. My town is not new to this, theres a chocolate themed cafe with plush couches, individual tables, reading corners and stools by the windows. As a college student me and my friends always frequented the place on a cad-b craving. Everythings so modern, so 21st century. Yet I am back to the lunch home with its south indian breakfast and good coffee, to meet an old friend. He or she always suggests that we go there. It seldom happens, but it happens. I go back to the place I used to know since I was a kid. Nothing has really changed and yet so much has changed. Its the place where I used to meet my uncles or cousins when on a quick trip to park on a weekend. Its the place where I lunched with my friends in high school. Its the place which so many of my acquaintances has been to in similar situations. Its great how somethings never change in a small town. They say its really hard for the owner to keep this institution running because nowadays people love themes and chocolate in thier coffee. But what could be a bigger theme than old memories. Plus theres an advantage, you only get them when you make them.

Cursed yet coveted small town life.

Has it ever occured to you, the small town you grew up in is now a barren mass of land that people have left to run dry or just disappear.

Is it fair for a place where you can buy groceries at a reasonable price, get fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers(in my hometown I can buy them from the bakery, its like I can buy cake and get flowers from same place). How is it possible that people turn heads away when it comes to people from small towns.

Skillfull Misunderstandings

People from small towns are like witches of eastwick for people from cities. They are mere objects you can undermine so that egos are elevated and their version of “better life” is materialised. Yes,the rickshawwala won’t put meter down, but we can always travel by bus, bike or car(if you own one). Yes, there are triple seaters and people ready for a road block. But the traffic is less, roads are good and everybody respects a red light no matter what.Maybe we aren’t always in a hurry but that doesnt mean we don’t have to be somewhere at a certain time. Its not about what we do or where we live, its about what you think about where you live.

Who you are?

Its not like every person from city would treat a “smalltownie” the same way but most of them are entitled to the thought of its so hard to live in the city. We all know one thing for sure, with polluted air, inflation and alienation city people have better oppurtunities in education, jobs and so on.Whereas, small town people have clean air, cheap groceries, cultured lifestyle and lesser opportunities and orthodox mentality. But I don’t think living and growing up in a small town has ever been a disadvantage, especially in digital world. I always thought, from my experience that small towns are the best places to grow up. They give you sense of belonging and I am seriously not high on To kill a mocking bird but we all need a second chance, right!

will never find a book like this.

never thought i would read something like this, and i am sure it has burned a spot in my memory. yeah! you could get judgemental and think what’s the big deal, coz both the main charecters seem messed up and go whirlwind once they find each other. but i think messed up is the new cool, (just kidding) but seriously who likes people who wear masks of perfection and act like nothing was ever wrong with them, who are best at denying about stuff, stuff that makes them anxious. still they go through all this, straight away faking it.this book gives me a chance to believe in what i always wanted to believe that ‘LIFE WAS NEVER A CAKE WALK, LIFE WILL NEVER BE A CAKE WALK, BUT WE CAN CHANGE IT, MAKE IT BETTER.

The importance of giving importance.

Ever wondered about how much time we spend thinking and stressing over stuff we don’t even care about. Then why do we do it. I thought its just me, but its every single friend of me I meet. Is freaking out the only way or there’s more to it. Can we deal with it more maturely. But seriously, maturity gets diminished in front of ego.

So next time, when I have to deal with something stupid, I won’t be feeding off anybody’s ego but will be concentrating on something that’s important to me.

Importance of being foolish.

‘BIMBO’ it starts with it and ends with it. Somebody calls you that and you think, well i don’t even think about it. i heard it a thousand times, and it doesn’t even matter now. Now that I know myself.

but what about these people who think their judgement is true, that its okay to take ‘looks’ for granted. but who’s really responsible for all this, is it the narrow minded attitude of a single person or is it just a cry for help. yes! help these people, it seems like the whole world needs help.

first of all they say how self absorbed and stupid someone’s being but giving importance merely to looks is simply vain, but i guess vanity’s fair. but they should give it thought, after all whatever they targeting always lies skin deep, isn’t it?
